5 Indoor Activities That You Can Do on Rainy Days

Picture of 5 Indoor Activities That You Can Do on Rainy Days

5 min read//

Lately, it is still rainy season in my tropical country, Indonesia, for months.

Most of the time happened from September to November. Sometimes the peak of the rainy season also occurred in December. While in other non-tropical countries, it is a winter season (I hope to see a snowflake with my own bare eyes in the future, though). I need to regularly check out my laundry, and yours as well.

However, there are fun things to do even though it is raining outside. In fact, I am writing this article during a rainy day in the evening time. Using my free time before going back from work. I am trying to remember exactly when I finish this draft. What day is it? The third day?

Pardon outdoor adventurers because the things here are for indoor activities only. You can try some of them. Choose one or two that suit your style. Consider it a reference when you cannot do your usual outside. Indoor activities can also be fun.

Some of them also catch my interest, and I am still doing them until the present day.

1. Reading Books

Sit down, relax, and make yourself comfortable.

Try to imagine the feeling when it is raining outside. The noisy but calming sound. The authentic smell of the rain. The quiet moment. Those are the perfect combination to spend time alone in a bedroom or living room, near a window with a blanket on.

You got the moment. Now you will need your best book to get in your hand and read it.

My top recommendation is The Silmarillion, created by J. R. R. Tolkien (rest in peace). This fantasy novel tells the beginning of the age, before The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. Truly a masterpiece. Best for you who love to dwell in a fantasy world while temporarily escaping the ordinary day.

Oh, and remember your hot chocolate.

2. Playing Games

Who does not love playing games?

It is always fun when we have enough time to play games! Whether it is playing our all-time favourite or exploring brand-new games. Either with mobile, console, or classic board games as the medium. Suits your own style.

As for me, I have played a board game before, it is called Dungeons and Dragons. It was amusing! A role-play fantasy game board with limitless imagination. The creator was inspired by The Silmarillion, and that is super cool!

Like my character, you can be a knight, rogue, thief, ranger, or simply a bard. You name it. Different races and backgrounds are the essential things that make this game unique. One thing to consider, it is better to have a team with different roles. Story development is highly needed to play this classic board game. I hope to rejoin my friends to play Dungeons and Dragons again.

Time to choose your preferred gaming style and prepare some snacks.

3. Listening to Music

Best way to do it until falling asleep.

Yes, sometimes I fall asleep easily just by marathon listening to music using earphones. Aren’t we all, or is it just me?

Escaping your daily routine by listening to music while it is raining outside might be a rare moment to enjoy. Not to mention if there is a blackout. All dark, and we cannot do many things but sleep. Music can be our great companion. Perfect time to chill ourselves out.

Any music genre is excellent and fit for the situation. Most of the time, my ears are up for classic jazz and classic rock. It feels like going back in time to when the music was produced. I can imagine myself just by simply sitting in the corner of a bar, in the 1960s era, with a fine jacket for a classic jazz song. My recommendation is Feeling Good by Nina Simone. The violin part in minutes 1.13 to 1.20 gives a James Bond vibe to the music.

Set up your playlist before pairing it with an earphone or speaker.

4. Watching Movies

The obvious one.

Of course, binge-watching is a must during the rainy season. Especially when heavy the rain won’t stop for a whole day. Being bored with all kinds of stuff. Then, we remember a movie or series we still need to watch.

Starting with a laptop or smart television and getting prepared. Get popcorn or other snacks. Curling up in a bed with a blanket on. Then you are all set to freely enjoy the moment.

As for me, I am still watching JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure Season 4 on Netflix. Kind of popular anime, though. The story itself is alright, and I am trying to figure out why I am still watching the series. It feels like I need to finish what I am started. This year is the last installment for the series, with a total of six seasons, so what will the end of the series be? I am highly curious.

Go on continuing your last watch.

5. Self Reflecting

Take good time for yourself.

It is better to do it in a quiet but warm room. The sky is raining, and vehicles and people are roaring, but one thing for sure is that nothing is much more thunderous than what is inside our minds.

Sometimes, doing nothing but thinking is also enjoyable. Why not? Having a deep conversation that only happens in both our mind and heart. Continuously.

See the past of ourselves, get a glimpse of it. Take the good memories. Lessons. Experiences. Leave alone the bad one. Take a fragment as a reference to get a picture of the future. Compile them as our self-evaluation to prepare for a new journey ahead. Go get some notes if necessary. A bad day does not mean a bad life.

Anyway, have fun reading this article, and I hope you get something from it. Leave a comment about what you’re about to do on a rainy day!

Rainy days always bring back childhood memories. It's also a nice reminder to do nothing and appreciate the present moment.
